LIEUTENANT OF PATROL
Mitch Nelson
Lieutenant Mitch Nelson is a proud native of Mobile, AL. He started his law enforcement career with the Mobile Police Department as a police cadet at 19 years old. He graduated from the police academy in 2000 and served as a police officer until 2004.
The next stop in his career was at the Foley Police Department. After 13 months, he relocated to north Texas and attended the Texoma Regional Police Academy. Lt Nelson then spent the next 7 years as a Sheriff’s Deputy with the Cooke County Sheriff's Office where he worked entirely in patrol.
Although he enjoyed his time in Texas, his heart was in Alabama and it was time to come home. Mitch remembered the family-like atmosphere and how much the City of Foley cared for their employees, and he immediately reapplied. In May of 2013, he was rehired with the Foley Police Department as a police officer. After spending several months on patrol, he successfully competed for a position in Investigations as a Detective. He served in this capacity until 2017 when he was promoted to Corporal and returned to patrol as a shift supervisor. In 2019 he was again promoted, this time to the rank of sergeant and remained in Patrol.
In 2020 he was granted a transfer into the vacated Training Coordinator's position. In this role he was responsible for training of all divisions, whether hosting, conducting, or otherwise facilitating. He was also responsible for being the quartermaster for these 100+ employees. In July of 2024, Mitch will be promoted to the position of Lieutenant and will be assigned the patrol division. He looks forward to this next chapter of his career and laying the foundation for many years to come.
