LIEUTENANT OF CODE ENFORCEMENT
Shawn Miller
Born and raised in Foley, Lieutenant Miller started off his working career in the military. Straight out of high school, he joined the United States Army where he served for three years. In 1987, Lt. Miller came back to Baldwin County and moved to the aircraft repair business now known as Collins Aerospace. He worked in the business for a handful of years but still had the itch for more. The company had a big layoff in the 90's and he took the opportunity to make the jump into law enforcement.
In 1992, Lt. Miller sent himself to the police academy and was hired at Foley in May of that year by Chief Jim Anderson. The Foley native started as a patrol officer and was there for 3 years before moving to Investigations in 1995 as a Corporal. Just a year later, Lt. Miller was promoted to Sergeant. He remained in Investigations until 2000 where he would investigate everything from shoplifting to murder scenes. He worked MANY cases while in Investigations, but one that sticks out was the Calvin Stallworth case. Foley was one killing shy of having a serial killer after Stallworth murdered two convenience store clerks during a robbery in the late 90's.
By 2000, Lt. Miller was moved back to patrol and stayed as a Sergeant in patrol until 2007. He had a short stint back in Criminal Investigations before going to the FBI National Academy in 2009. Immediately following his graduation, Lt. Miller was assigned another patrol shift. It was while in patrol, in 2011, when Miller was promoted to Lieutenant. Under this new rank, he oversaw the Support Services Division (now known as Community Safety). After three years there, he was moved to Lieutenant of Administration, also known as the jail. In 2016, he found himself back in Investigations but this time as the Commander of the division. He was there for two years before heading back to Corrections for two years. When Chief Bullock took over the department in 2020, Lt. Miller moved to Community Safety where he stayed up until this year. He is currently in the process of transitioning to the Lieutenant of Code Enforcement.
Why Foley PD?
Growing up in this area, Lt. Miller knew he wanted to make his mark here. He wanted to protect the community he has always called home.
What's a favorite memory?
"There are several high spots, but the highlight of my career is I delivered a baby on the side of the road. It was different. It was exciting. Both of us [him and Ofc. Bobby Erwin] was lost... The baby did all the work."
